Comprehensive paediatric first aid training for early years settings and carers
This 2-day Paediatric First Aid course provides the practical skills and knowledge needed to respond effectively to medical emergencies involving babies and young children.
Designed for early years professionals, carers and childcare providers, the course covers a comprehensive range of paediatric first aid situations and is designed to meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework.

This comprehensive course is ideal for people working with or caring for babies and young children, including those working towards an early years educator qualification. The course focuses specifically on paediatric first aid for infants and children.
Participants must be 16 years or older.
What you will learn?
This course equips you with essential paediatric first aid skills and a practical understanding of emergency response procedures for infants and children. Key topics include:
- Responsibilities of a paediatric first aider
- Unresponsive child or infant
- Child and infant resuscitation (CPR)
- Use of an AED (defibrillator)
- Choking (child and infant)
- Anaphylaxis, including use of an auto-injector
- Minor and severe bleeding
- Shock
- Seizures
- Asthma
- Low blood sugar
- Meningitis and sepsis awareness
- Poisoning
- Fainting
- Head, neck and spinal injuries
- Fractures and soft tissue injuries
- Burns and scalds
- Eye injuries and foreign objects
- Bites and stings
- Extreme heat and cold
Training includes practical, scenario-based learning designed to build confidence and prepare learners to respond effectively to real-world paediatric emergencies.
Course outcomes
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
- Assess a paediatric emergency and take appropriate action
- Provide appropriate first aid to babies and young children
- Perform child and infant CPR and respond appropriately to AED prompts
- Recognise and respond to common childhood injuries and illnesses
- Understand the responsibilities of a paediatric first aider and when to seek further medical assistance
- Act calmly and appropriately in an emergency
Certification
Participants are continuously assessed throughout the course through practical observation and written assessment.
On successful completion, learners receive a St John Ambulance Paediatric First Aid certificate, valid for three years.
