Renew your workplace first aid qualification and keep your skills up to date

This two-day First Aid at Work Requalification course refreshes and updates the practical knowledge and skills needed to respond effectively to workplace medical emergencies.

Designed for qualified workplace first aiders whose certificate is due to expire, the course covers the same comprehensive content as the three-day First Aid at Work course, delivered over two days by building on delegates’ existing knowledge and skills.

Who is this course for?

This course is for qualified workplace first aiders who hold a First Aid at Work certificate and need to renew their qualification.

It is particularly suitable for:

• Existing qualified workplace first aiders
• Employees responsible for workplace first aid cover
• Organisations requiring continued First Aid at Work certification

If your certificate has expired, you are still able to attend this course. However, the HSE recommends attending the First Aid at Work (3-day course) if more than a month has elapsed since your certificate expired.

What you’ll learn

This course covers the same comprehensive content as the three-day First Aid at Work course, delivered over two days. It refreshes and updates the knowledge and practical skills needed to respond effectively to a wide range of workplace first aid emergencies, including:

• Adult resuscitation (CPR)
• Allergic reaction
• Asthma
• Bone, muscle and joint injuries
• Burns and scalds
• Chest pains
• Choking adult
• Communication and casualty care
• Defibrillator pad placement (theory based)
• Defibrillator prompts and how to respond (theory based)
• Eye injuries
• Fainting
• Head injuries
• Life-threatening bleeding
• Low blood sugar
• Managing an emergency
• Minor and severe bleeding
• Poisons and what to do if someone has been poisoned
• Role of the first aider, including knowledge of health and safety regulations
• Seizures
• Shock
• Spinal injuries
• Stroke
• Unresponsive adult

Training includes practical scenarios designed to refresh confidence and reinforce effective emergency response skills.

Course outcomes

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

• Assess an emergency and take appropriate action to protect yourself, the casualty and others
• Provide effective first aid for a wide range of workplace injuries and medical emergencies
• Perform adult CPR and respond appropriately to automated external defibrillator (AED) prompts
• Recognise and respond appropriately to life-threatening bleeding, shock and an unresponsive casualty
• Provide appropriate first aid for choking, burns, fractures, wounds and other common workplace injuries
• Recognise and respond appropriately to medical emergencies including asthma, allergic reactions, chest pains, seizures, stroke and low blood sugar
• Understand the role and responsibilities of a workplace first aider, including communication, casualty care and managing an emergency

Certification and assessment

Participants are assessed throughout the course through practical observation and written assessment.

On successful completion of the course, you will receive a St John Ambulance First Aid at Work Requalification certificate, valid for three years.

The qualification is recognised by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) as meeting workplace first aid requirements.
