Course Description

Essential paediatric first aid training for early years settings and carers

This one-day Emergency Paediatric First Aid course provides the practical skills needed to respond effectively to medical emergencies involving babies and young children.

Designed for parents, carers and childcare professionals, the course covers essential emergency paediatric first aid skills in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) guidance and recognised childcare best practice.

This course focuses specifically on emergency first aid for infants and children.

Participants must be 16 years or older.

What you will learn?

This course equips you with essential paediatric first aid skills and a practical understanding of emergency response procedures for children and infants. Key topics include:

  • Responsibilities of a paediatric first aider
  • Assessing an emergency and prioritising action
  • Unresponsive child or infant
  • Child and infant resuscitation (CPR)
  • Use of an AED (defibrillator)
  • Choking (child and infant)
  • Anaphylaxis, including use of an auto-injector
  • Severe bleeding
  • Shock
  • Seizures
  • Asthma
  • Fainting
  • Minor wounds and injuries

Training is delivered through practical, scenario-based learning designed to build confidence and prepare you to respond effectively to real-world paediatric emergencies.

Course outcomes

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Assess a paediatric emergency and take appropriate action
  • Provide immediate first aid to babies and young children
  • Perform child and infant CPR and respond appropriately to AED prompts
  • Recognise and respond to common paediatric emergencies
  • Understand the responsibilities of a paediatric first aider
  • Act calmly and appropriately in an emergency

Certification

Participants are continuously assessed throughout the course through practical observation.

On successful completion, learners receive a St John Ambulance Emergency Paediatric First Aid certificate, valid for three years.
