Bertie Unleashed: St John Ambulance Isle of Man wowed the public at their Open Day

St John Ambulance Isle of Man hosted a fantastic Open Day at its headquarters on Saturday 25 October, welcoming members of the public, families, and key community leaders for a behind-the-scenes look at their vital work.

Interactive activities designed to teach essential life-saving skills filled the day, with visitors young and old getting the chance to practice CPR, test their precision with the choking vest target practice, and learn crucial bandage dressing techniques. Another major highlight was the dynamic Drill Team demonstration, showcasing the discipline and teamwork of their Cadet members. Guests also took tours of their new state-of-the-art ambulance, getting a close-up look at one of the vehicles used for events like the TT races and Manx Grand Prix.

The event was particularly special thanks to the attendance of several high-profile supporters. They were joined by The Worshipful the Mayor of Douglas, Mr Councillor Steven Crellin, who spent time speaking with volunteers and experiencing the interactive displays as part of a preview before the event was opened to the public. St John Ambulance Isle of Man was also honoured to host His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor, Sir John Lorimer, and Lady Lorimer, and their guest Colonel Angus Loudon MBE, Priory Secretary for St John Ambulance Scotland, who joined them for an in-depth tour of headquarters and spoke with a number of volunteers and cadets. Colonel Loudon has been with the organisation for over 10 years, having previously served as St John Ambulance Scotland’s Chief Executive Officer. He currently acts as the European, Middle East and African (EMEA) Coordinator for the Order of St John Worldwide.

Strong internal collaboration was also highlighted, as the Bertie Badger costume was kindly loaned by St John Ambulance in Warrington, ensuring the mascot could be present. Bertie proved to be a major highlight of the day, proving extremely popular with both members and the public, who queued up to get pictures with our famous youth programme mascot.
